KERRIE SAUNDERS

Native foods and grains

Kerrie Saunders is a Kamilarori/Gomeroi woman from Moree, NSW who is passionate about about foods, native grains and the sustainability of Country. Kerrie is co-founder and owner of cultural business of Yinarr-ma which offers bush tucker tours along the Mehi River.

Kerrie is also a member of Urban Landcare, undertaking work to restore, regenerate and plant native vegetation along the river bank. She is also a technician on the native grains project with Sydney University at the Narrabri campus on the Indigenous grasslands.

Kerrie says: ‘I have felt empowered to learn and develop skills that will allow me to be able to encourage those around me to embrace their Culture. The Native grains have been eaten by my old people for thousands of years. They’re gluten free, highly nutritious and they are well known to keep the land healthy. I want to make young people aware of how important native grains are to Culture and identity to be able to genuinely connect back to Country’.

Join Kerrie Saunders and fellow panelists Uncle Noel Butler, Mark Olive and facilitator Clarence Slockee on the Aunty Beryl Cruse stage for a broad discussion about food sovereignty, bush regeneration and creating a new Australian cuisine.
